Ngununggula, the first regional art gallery in the Southern Highlands

Boasting ambitious works by contemporary artists, the Southern Highlands’ premier regional art gallery sets the bar high for rural art institutions. Founded by acclaimed artist Ben Quilty, and now under the direction of Megan Monte, Ngununggula has redeveloped a former dairy shed and veterinary clinic in Retford Park in Bowral, a National Trust property, as an arts destination with a sensitive condition to the inheritance. – cutting-edge design by Tonkin Zulaihka Greer.

Make time for the 90-minute drive from Sydney and continue the reflection with food for your belly at the on-site Hearth Café. The team serves a flavor-focused, seasonal menu created using ingredients from Moonacres Farm and local producers.

The name of the gallery comes from the word “belonging” in the traditional language of the Gundungurra people. With a focus on visual arts, education, artistic practice and cultural voice, the gallery’s program represents the region and beyond through major exhibitions, artist-led projects, events in live, workshops, artist talks and more. Surrounded by landscaped gardens, the building contains four gallery spaces, including an entry pavilion that will house a new commission from an Indigenous artist each year.

Ngununggula is open daily from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and admission is free.
