The Salida Public Art Commission seeks design proposals for a new public art space – by Brooke Gilmore


The City of Salida Public Art Commission has issued a Request for Design Proposal (RFP) for a major new public art project. The design project in question is the site-specific renovation/conversion of a 5,578 square foot municipal property into an artistic community space celebrating Salida’s diverse character and heritage. The space will showcase a major new work or works of art and incorporate landscaping and public viewing considerations.

The project location is at the corner of US Highway 291 and G Street, at the entrance to the downtown business district and the Creative Arts District. Currently, the site is designed and used as a recreational skate park, including ramps and concrete bowls traditionally associated with such facilities (a new skate park is under construction on the grounds of the Salida Aquatic Center on US Highway 50 ).

The study area is bounded by G Street to the east; West First Street to the north; the Monarch Spur Trail to the west; and parking lots to the south. The site is currently mostly concrete, with several deep bowls used by skaters. There is a small building on the site which may or may not be retained, at the recommendation of the designer.

The desired features for the renovated space should possess these qualities:

  • historical stature
  • visually inviting
  • beautiful but durable
  • year-round use
  • preserve the city’s heritage.

Design proposals must include several specific elements (described in the RFP) as well as the proponent’s qualifications and preliminary renovation budget. Full requirements and project details can be found by clicking here.

This is a paid design project and the chosen design proposal will receive significant compensation from the City of Salida. The deadline for the city to receive proposals is 2:00 p.m. on July 19, 2021. Three hard copies and one digital copy of the proposal must be submitted to the City of Salida Public Art Commission, 448 East First St. , Salida CO 81201, Attn: Michael Varnum, Director of Arts and Culture.

The winning candidate of the tender will be invited to enter into a professional services agreement with the city of Salida; a copy of which can be obtained from the town of Salida. The winning proposal will be announced on July 26.
